RAISED SO FAR: $8500
GOAL: $25000

Scarred Hearts is a realistic and sometimes frightening window into the life of domestic abuse victims, who yearn to find the courage to break free of their oppressors.  The details of the lives of domestic abuse victims, the primal fears and struggles are often hidden away and spoken about in hushed tones.  On average nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused. During one year it equates to more than 10 million women and men. Domestic abuse and violence has many forms from physical violence, emotional abuse, rape, stalking, child abuse and homicide.

The belief that the abuse suffered defines us in some way, dictates who we must become and how we must live can often be deafening. This story speaks to anyone who has been in such a situation and tells them that with courage and support they can rise above your situation. There is a way out.

Our film also highlights the healing power of music. Art in any form provides a strong and welcome relief from pain and in this case gives voice to the victims who have lost hope. Scarred Hearts showcases this right from the start. It is another way art gives voice to the voiceless.

The filmmakers will partner with domestic violence organizations to feature resources and contact information in the ending credits for viewers of the film who might be inspired to take their first steps.

This story is based on the director/screenwriter’s childhood. This script was developed with the belief that something so personal can become universal. He and his mother lived this story.

Many viewers of the film may see themselves or someone they know in one, if not several of these characters and realize that they are not alone.

We will take the journey as Johanna does; fearful, contented, anxious, tearful, but ultimately, hopeful. Perhaps someone may see himself or herself in Cliff and recognize the need to change.

Scarred Hearts is a universal story of resilience and growth that we are certain many will feel connected to. It is our hope to inspire those who are and have been in abusive relationships to speak up. It will empower people of all ages to see themselves as valuable. It is not only a woman’s story, it is a universal story of human abuse. It will continue the dialogue and spark meaningful conversations to prevent and stop domestic violence. Perhaps it can even save someone’s life.
